At the other end of the century — and at the same time in another register of ambition — the island began to attract a different kind of European: the administrator-intellectual who sought to impose textbooks and fort walls on a place with its own sovereign rhythms. Accounts written by a mid-seventeenth century French administrator brought a new voice into the conversation; his later printed histories would be among the earliest European attempts to describe Madagascar's peoples, its coasts and its interior dangers. The ambition here was administrative: to plant a colony, to secure a port for an empire, to translate a living island into a reliable possession.
A third figure introduced itself to the archipelago not as state official but as outlaw: men who found the island's coves convenient for ships running foul of imperial law. The late seventeenth-century era of high-seas predation deposited a flotilla of brigands along Madagascar's sheltered bays. These men were not explorers in the scientific sense, but their presence mattered: they redistributed goods, introduced new violence and commerce, and served as furtive nodes between island communities and distant markets. The island, for a time, was as much a haven as a prize.
Lastly, towards the end of the eighteenth century a French naturalist and voyager recorded the island's strange flora and fauna with an eye to cataloguing. These four impulses — imperial trade, colonial administration, outlaw refuge, scientific curiosity — braided together to create the peculiar magnetism of Madagascar between 1500 and 1900. They were distinct aims that sometimes cooperated and often collided. In a single port a governor's envoy might meet a trader and encounter a former pirate; in the scrub beyond the beach a naturalist might kneel to sketch a creature the locals already knew by name.
Preparations in European ports ranged from the prosaic to the obsessive. A ship destined for the Indian Ocean carried not only sails and shot but cedar and canvas for barter, medicines that were often little better than superstition, preserved biscuits that hardened into hunger, and chests of trade cloth whose patterns would on arrival be judged cheap or irresistible. Crews were a patchwork of professions: pilots to hold course by lunar altitudes and reef, surgeons who administered with crude instruments, mariners who judged the wind by the position of gulls. Funding came from companies and crown purses, from private adventurers and from merchants who wanted a share of the southern trade.
The island itself was already known in close-to-home networks. Arab and Swahili sailors had long fished and traded along its shores; the coasts were dotted with small towns and river mouths that served regional commerce. But to the European mind a blank on the map was an invitation rather than an absence: blankness implied a right to name, to place, to put a cross and date upon a coast. The voyages that left for Madagascar carried with them that civilizational assumption — that the charting of a place equated to control.
As the first great departure for Madagascar was being readied in various ports, the air smelled of pitch and the sound of hammers. Men wrote lists: rope, oil, lime, preserved meat.
